FOR NURSES, RESIDENTS, TRAVEL NURSES & HEALTHCARE PROFESSIONALS RELOCATING TO TAMPA BAY
Healthcare Professional Relocation to Tampa Bay From a Registered Nurse
As both a nurse and a Tampa Bay Realtor, I understand the realities of shift work, commute fatigue, and relocating for a healthcare career. Whether you're moving for residency, a new contract, travel nursing, or long-term relocation, I'm here to help make the transition smoother.
I'm Jamie Rose Ward, a Realtor with Mihara & Associates, Inc. and a Registered Nurse with a BSN. I've been an RN since 2017. This page brings together Tampa Bay healthcare systems, residency and nurse-transition resources, Florida licensing information, and relocation considerations so you can begin planning your move with clearer information.
Local Hospitals and Healthcare Growth in Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay's healthcare landscape spans major institutions and systems including Tampa General Hospital, USF Health, AdventHealth, BayCare, HCA Florida, and Johns Hopkins All Children's Hospital. If you're relocating for a healthcare role, the location of your hospital or program can materially change which communities and routes make sense to consider. Start with your work location first, then compare housing options around the commute you actually want to live with.
Tampa General
A major academic health system and teaching hospital in Tampa, affiliated with the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine. TGH supports a wide range of medical specialties, residency and fellowship training, and healthcare careers across the region.
USF Health
USF Health brings together medicine, nursing, public health, pharmacy, research, rehabilitation sciences, and patient care through the University of South Florida. Its academic health programs are an important part of Tampa Bay’s healthcare and training landscape.
AdventHealth
AdventHealth Tampa serves Hillsborough County from its East Fletcher Avenue hospital and provides a broad range of hospital and specialty services. Healthcare professionals relocating for roles within AdventHealth should consider the specific facility and location when comparing communities.
BayCare
BayCare is a large not-for-profit academic health system with 16 hospitals and hundreds of care locations across West Central Florida, including facilities in Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas Counties. Its regional footprint makes work location especially important when deciding where to live.
HCA Florida
HCA Florida Healthcare operates hospitals, emergency rooms, surgery centers, and specialty facilities throughout Florida, including multiple hospitals and care locations across the Tampa Bay region. Confirming your exact facility should be one of the first steps in planning your relocation.
Johns Hopkins All Children's
Based in St. Petersburg, Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital is a pediatric clinical and academic health system offering care across more than 50 pediatric medical and surgical subspecialties. It also operates outpatient locations throughout the Tampa Bay region.
WATCH JAMIE'S INTRODUCTION
A Message From Jamie About Healthcare Relocation
In this short video, I introduce my background as a Registered Nurse and Realtor and share why healthcare growth matters to people considering a move to Tampa Bay.
I’m here to answer questions and help you picture what living here could look like.
Healthcare Hubs and Specialty Centers Across Tampa Bay
Tampa Bay does not have one central medical district. Major healthcare employers, teaching institutions, specialty centers, and hospital campuses are spread across Tampa, St. Petersburg, Pinellas County, and the growing communities to the north. Knowing where your specific facility is located can help narrow the areas worth considering before you begin a home search.
Academic Medicine & Teaching
Downtown Tampa & Davis Islands
Tampa General Hospital’s main campus is on Davis Islands, while the USF Health Morsani College of Medicine and Heart Institute are located nearby in downtown Tampa’s Water Street district. Together, these facilities form an important academic medicine, teaching, research, and cardiovascular hub.
Cancer Care & North Tampa Healthcare
USF / Fletcher Avenue Area
North Tampa includes Moffitt Cancer Center’s Magnolia Campus on the University of South Florida campus and AdventHealth Tampa on East Fletcher Avenue. This area brings together cancer treatment and research, hospital care, surgery, emergency services, and other specialty programs.
Pediatric & Regional Specialty Care
St. Petersburg & Tampa Bay
Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital is based in St. Petersburg and provides pediatric care across more than 50 medical and surgical subspecialties. Its network also includes outpatient locations throughout the Tampa Bay region, including Tampa, Brandon, Pasco, and Wesley Chapel.
Also worth knowing: BayCare and HCA Florida operate hospitals and care locations throughout Hillsborough, Pasco, and Pinellas Counties, so the exact facility where you will work still matters when comparing communities and commute options. BayCare alone lists hospitals in Tampa, Lutz, Wesley Chapel, Clearwater, Safety Harbor, St. Petersburg, and New Port Richey.
Residency and New-Grad Programs
If you’re relocating to Tampa Bay for medical residency, fellowship, or your first nursing position, several major healthcare systems offer structured training programs for physicians and newly licensed nurses. Program requirements, application windows, specialties, and cohort dates can change, so use the official resources below for the most current information.
USF Health Graduate Medical Education
USF Health Morsani College of Medicine sponsors residency and fellowship programs across a broad range of medical and surgical specialties, with clinical training taking place at major Tampa Bay healthcare institutions.
Tampa General Nurse Residency
Tampa General’s Nurse Residency Program supports graduate nurses and RNs with less than one year of acute-care hospital experience as they transition into clinical practice. The year-long program includes mentoring, education, specialty training, and evidence-based practice work.
BayCare RN Residency
BayCare offers a one-year RN Residency Program for newly graduated nurses across its hospital network. The program combines clinical orientation, professional development, mentorship, and opportunities across a range of nursing specialties.
Johns Hopkins All Children’s Pediatric RN Residency
Johns Hopkins All Children’s Hospital in St. Petersburg offers an accredited pediatric RN residency for nurses beginning careers in pediatric care, with participating areas including medical-surgical nursing, oncology, critical care, NICU, PICU, operating room, and emergency care.
HCA Florida Brandon Nurse Residency
HCA Florida Brandon Hospital offers a paid, year-long Nurse Residency Program designed to help graduate nurses transition from the classroom into hospital practice through clinical training, preceptorship, simulation, mentoring, and continuing education.
AdventHealth Tampa Bay Nurse Residency
AdventHealth’s Nurse Residency Program supports new graduate nurses transitioning into practice. Greater Tampa opportunities currently span AdventHealth Tampa, Carrollwood, Connerton, North Pinellas, Riverview, and Wesley Chapel, with cohort availability changing throughout the year.
Commutes, Major Highways & Shift-Work Planning
Tampa Bay commute patterns can vary widely depending on the hospital, shift time, route, construction, and whether toll roads or bridge crossings are involved. Rather than relying on a single “average commute,” start with your exact work location and compare the routes you would actually use during your expected clock-in and clock-out times.
I-275 | Tampa & St. Petersburg
I-275 is one of the region’s main north-south routes, connecting St. Petersburg, central Tampa, North Tampa, and the I-75 corridor. In Tampa, it provides access near downtown as well as major east-west roads including Kennedy Boulevard, Hillsborough Avenue, Fowler Avenue, and Fletcher Avenue.
I-75 | East & Northeast Tampa Bay
I-75 serves the eastern side of the Tampa Bay region and continues north through Hillsborough and Pasco Counties. It connects with major corridors such as I-4, Fowler Avenue, Fletcher Avenue, State Road 56, and other routes serving growing communities to the northeast.
Veterans Expressway / Suncoast Parkway | Northbound Corridor
State Road 589 creates a continuous limited-access, tolled corridor from Hillsborough County through Pasco, Hernando, and into Citrus County. Florida’s Turnpike identifies the Suncoast Parkway as an alternative to US 19, US 41, and I-75 for north-south travel in this part of the region.
US 19 | Pinellas, Pasco & Hernando
US 19 is a major north-south surface corridor through Pinellas and Pasco Counties and continues toward Hernando County. Unlike an interstate or expressway, much of the route includes signalized intersections, so travel conditions can vary considerably depending on location and time of day. FDOT is continuing mobility and safety improvements along the corridor.
Before You Choose a Community
For healthcare professionals working nights, weekends, early mornings, or rotating shifts, test the actual route you expect to drive. Compare your primary route, a backup route, toll costs if applicable, and how bridge crossings or major interchanges could affect the trip. Traffic can change significantly by time of day, so avoid choosing a home based only on a mileage estimate.
Florida Licensing & Relocation Resources
Florida is part of the Nurse Licensure Compact. If you hold a qualifying multistate license from another compact state and that state remains your primary state of residence, compact privilege may allow you to practice in Florida without obtaining a separate Florida single-state license.
If you permanently change your primary state of residence to Florida from another compact state, compact rules require you to apply for licensure by endorsement in Florida. Nurses moving from noncompact states should review Florida’s endorsement requirements directly with the Florida Board of Nursing.
Always verify your own licensing status and timing with the Board before your employment start date.

Frequently Asked Questions
Do I need to be licensed in Florida before I move for a nursing job?
Not always. Florida participates in the Nurse Licensure Compact, so a nurse who holds a qualifying multistate license from another compact state may be able to practice in Florida under that license while another compact state remains their primary state of residence. If you permanently change your primary state of residence to Florida, you must apply for licensure by endorsement in Florida within 60 days of relocating. Nurses moving from noncompact states should review Florida’s endorsement requirements directly with the Florida Board of Nursing. Always verify your own status and timing before your employment start date.
Which Tampa Bay neighborhoods are closest to the major hospitals?
There isn't one answer for all of Tampa Bay because the major hospitals and healthcare campuses are spread across multiple counties. The right area depends on the specific facility, your shift time, and the commute you are willing to make. Once your employer or program location is known, Jamie can help you compare communities against the commute and lifestyle priorities that matter to you.
Do you work with travel nurses on short-term contracts, not just permanent relocations?
Short-term assignments can involve different housing considerations than a permanent relocation. If you are moving to Tampa Bay for a travel nursing contract, contact Jamie with your expected assignment length, work location, and housing goals so you can discuss what options may make sense for your situation.
What information should I have before starting a healthcare relocation home search?
Start with the exact hospital, medical campus, or program location where you will work, your expected start date, approximate housing budget, preferred commute, and whether you are planning to buy or are still deciding. Those details make it much easier to narrow the communities that are realistic for your move.
What areas does Jamie serve for healthcare relocation?
Jamie serves clients across Hernando, Pasco, Citrus, Hillsborough, and Pinellas Counties. Because Tampa Bay healthcare employers are spread throughout the region, the best place to begin is with your specific work location rather than choosing a county or community first.
Still Have Questions About Your Healthcare Relocation?
